Using Your Out-of-Network Benefits for Counseling

At Promise Counseling, we want you to feel informed about all of your options when it comes to paying for therapy. Even if we are not in-network with your insurance, you may still be able to use your out-of-network (OON) benefits to receive reimbursement for sessions.

What Are Out-of-Network Benefits?

  • Many insurance plans offer coverage for mental health services, even if you see a provider who is not in-network.
  • With OON benefits, you pay for sessions upfront and then submit documentation to your insurance for possible partial reimbursement.
  • Reimbursement amounts vary by plan.

How to Check If You Have OON Benefits

Call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask the following questions:

  1. Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health therapy?
  2. What percentage of the session fee will be reimbursed?
  3. Is there an out-of-network deductible, and how much of it has been met?
  4. Is there a limit on the number of sessions covered per year?
  5. What is the process for submitting claims?

How to Use Your Benefits

  • Pay for Your Session: You’ll pay our session fee at the time of service. The session fee is $200 or the agreed upon sliding scale fee with your provider.
  • Get a Superbill: Upon request, we’ll provide a monthly superbill—a detailed receipt with all the information your insurance company needs.
  • Submit to Insurance: Send the superbill to your insurance company (usually via their portal, mail, or app).
  • Receive Reimbursement: Your insurance company will send any reimbursement directly to you.

Helpful Tips

  • Ask if your insurance company accepts claims electronically or if you need to mail them.
  • Keep copies of everything you submit.
  • Processing times vary, so follow up if you don’t hear back.
  • Some clients use services like Mentaya, Thrizer,  or Reimbursify to make the process easier.
